Goa is a former Portuguese colony. Terribly, they converted Indians to catholicism by force, killing thousands. There are so many small beautifully painted chapels around Goa. At one point these chapels were adorned with colourful paintings and gold leaf however the Portuguese ordered all churches to be painted white, a symbol of purity. They also banned the use of colour white on residential buildings, believing Indians were impure, an act which had the unintentional result of abundant, gorgeously-colourful painted homes in Goa.
